24

The 7th season of 24 started last night. It's a 2 hour premiere and the second hour is playing tonight at 8 on FOX. I didn't watch last nights episode because I didn't want to wait an entire 23 hours to watch the second hour. It was recorded on the DVR though so tonight when I return from small group, I'll watch both episodes. I'm super excited! I thought 24:Redemption was absolutely amazing! My brother-in-law and I watched it like 3 times. One of those times was with some deleted material that Johnathan bought so I've seen some extra stuff, like the guy you thought was blown up by that land mine opened his eyes at the very end! That means trouble! I love Jack Bauer! He's pretty much my hero. Yes, I've even had dreams of him saving me from certain death. I hate people who say, "he's just a tv character." I know he is, but he's a great one! I also can't stand people who have watched only a few episodes or a season or two but they aren't devoted enough to start back at season 1 and watch it all. There's so much background story in 24. Some people who have watched since season one may start to call it predictable. I disagree. The only reason it may be predictable to those devoted watchers is because you have learned what 24 is all about. You expect a twist. You expect something unpredictable to happen. That's what makes it so great. Also, if you're able to figure out what that great twist will be, even more kudos to you! That means you've come to expect something great of the show and anything less would be dissapointing. For example, in season six when they told Jack that Audry was dead, I knew right away it wasn't truth and she would "come back to life" later in the season. Same with Tony Almeada who we will see in season seven never actually died. If it isn't specifically shown, don't believe it. And even then, don't believe it. After all, how many times have we seen Jack die? Like three? Anywayz, all this to say I'm so excited the season has finally started. Follow the rules! If you miss an episode, don't watch the next one till you've caught yourself up!

SEMS

Posted on January 12, 2009 at 12:10 PM Comments comments (0)

SEMS stands for Substitute/Employee Management System. This is how I get substitute assignments. An employee signs into this system and creates an absence specifying the dates, times, location, wether or not a substitute is needed, and possibly requesting a certain substitute by locating them by name or phone number. The absence then goes into SEMS as an available job and begins calling substitutes on the phone. Subs can view this job online (at the Smart Find Express website) or hear it if they call in on the phone and can then either accept or deny the assignment. If a sub is requested then the job MUST be offered to this person before it is offered to any other sub. Only when this person denies the assignment is it available to all the other subs.

I've had problems with this system before. The main one being that I was requested for a job and SEMS offered it to someone else before me. If there is a problem such as this, the only remedy to the problem lies with the Sub Desk. Either the employee or the substitute must call the Sub Desk, explain the problem, and see if they can fix it. It can USUALLY be fixed without another problem. The down side to the Sub Desk is that they don't get into the office until 7am and then they never answer the phone! And it's stupid for both the sub and the employee to call and call and call and waste their time in the morning to try and fix the problem which by the time someone at the Sub Desk actually answers the phone, it's too late. What's too late? The substitute has 1 hour from the time they accept the job to arrive at the location. So if even if an assignment starts at 8:00, if the sub accepts it at 8:15, they have until 9:15 to get there.

Let me explain the situation that occurred this morning. Last night I accepted an assignment for a school in Chino from 9-3. Deon called me this morning asking if I could work for him from 7-1. At first I said I already had an assignment but then realized 7-1 would be better since I had too work at Sylvan in the afternoon and would be late if I kept the 9-3 position and I wouldn't have time to do my h/w in the afternoon. So I said I would just cancel the assignment I had and take his instead. Deon had already requested another sub, Manny, who was unavailable so I should have been able to accept it. Unfortunately, I couldn't view or hear the assignment. I couldn't view or hear ANY available assignments! Odd. Deon tried to cancel his absence and create a new one requesting me (instead of Manny), but there was no option to do so (which is also odd because there used to be that option).

We both began calling the sub desk to see what was wrong with the system and so they could assign that absence to me (they are like the god of SEMS, usually). But with it being only 6:25 am, nobody was there to answer the phone. We both kept calling anyway. Someone finally answered me at 7:20 and said that the substitute, who had picked up the assignment at 6:30, would have been on her way already and it was too late to assign it to me, especially because Manny had been requested and not me. Deon called me 20 minutes later saying that nobody had shown up yet and asked if I'd gotten the absence. I explained what the sub desk lady (Pam) told me and he said Pam had told him that the sub didn't pick it up until 6:59am. That's a whole half hour later than when Pam told ME the sub picked it up! So at 7:20 then, when I spoke to Pam, it wouldn't have been too late to change the assignment to me because the sub still had 40 minutes to get there. So why did she say so? I still don't know. And why couldn't I see any available jobs? Pam said it was because I cancelled my previously assigned job and SEMS believed I wasn't available to accept any. That's new. SEMS has never thought that about me before when I cancelled an assignment.

So I'm angry that I'm not working today, at all, because by the time everything was figured out, there were no jobs available for me to work anywhere that the sub desk could assign me to. I'm also angry that I had to spend all morning on the phone trying to figure out why I couldn't view or accept any assignments including the one Deon wanted to request me for but couldn't. Deon is angry that he had to spend all morning (on his day off!) calling as well just to try and get a good sub in his classroom, which he didn't even get. Deon's teacher and other assistant are angry that they got a sub they don't know who showed up more than an hour after school began. A sub who doesn't know them, the kids, the schedule, or how things are run. A sub who knows these things makes the day go a whole lot smoother for the classroom when a staff member is absent, which is why they have an option to request certain subs in the first place.

I'm not sure if you readers understand this situation at all and why it is so frustrating for me right now, but I just needed to vent my frustrations! I do have other issues with SEMS, but I'll save you the pain and not go into it. But it's days like today I wish I had a permanent position or a completely different job.

Earth: The Biography

A week or two ago I recorded a marathon on our DVR of Earth: The Biography. Each episode is on something different: water, air, the atmosphere, ice, volcanos, the rare planet, etc. It's been very interesting to learn more about the planet and the impact each aspect has on life today. Although I have to admit that I don't believe alot of what has been explained for one reason or another. Every time they say something like, "Beginning over 4 billion years ago..." I just think, "ya right, but let's hear it anyway." Scientists have actually come up with quite a good explanation for the earth, on the surface. This series explains (and shows) the creation of earth as the following: A bunch of rocks collided in space. The rocks formed together but the impact of them colliding created an enormous amount of heat which was stored at the earth's core. This heat energy caused eruptions of molten lava through the crust of the earth which reshaped the surface. The carbon dioxide released during the eruptions helped form the atmosphere and trapped heat from the sun to keep the earth warm. How did we get water then if the earth is just rocks and heat? Well apparently some comets hold large amounts of water and when a lot of them hit the earth, the water from them spilled out over the earth. This is not where ALL of our water came from (I forget where the rest of it came from and I already deleted that episode), but it IS where the majority of it is from. One of the first signs of life that may have been possible probably fed off of the gasses from the volcanos and formed in the water. Another early life form is the stramatolite which can be found all over the coast of Australia and look like lumps in the water. These are really layer upon layer of bacteria and at one time "ruled the planet as the most complex form of life"..... Anywayz, being a Christian, I obviously don't believe all of this. Although, like I said, alot of what is said seems completely reasonable on the surface and it is quite likely that this is what many many people believe now. I guess that's what makes it FAITH right? It's a somewhat reasonably alternative to Creationism and it takes FAITH to not believe it...? But it's been so interesting to learn other things about our planet as well. And each episode has some extraordinary action clips and adventures. Like a skydiver with a board strapped to his feet and surfing on air to demonstrate how fluid the air really is! It was seriously insane! I would highly recommend this show to anyone wanting to learn more about this planet we call home. Just don't believe everything you hear on it! Right now I'm watching my last episode: The Rare Planet.

Redneck Barbies

Missy received a bag from someone with things from her own wedding inside. There were some pretty interesting things in there. Some of which I think Missy liked and others that were just too much, like two Redneck Barbies. Yes, Redneck Barbies. I'd never seen them before tonight, but they were pretty funny. They both have buttons to push and they talk. The woman's battery is dead though so nothing happened when we pushed her button, which is an outtie belly-button because she's pregnant (and "holding" a baby). These things were pretty great and I had to take a vid so you can see for yourself.

Husky Puppies

Last June my brother's husky had her first litter of puppies. There were four but two of them died from the heat and the other two of them died because King thought they were gophers. (He gets rewarded for killing gophers around the yard) This is an entry I posted on my other site (which I haven't used in awhile) with pictures of the parents, Romeo and Bella. Take a look at these good looking dogs. Romeo and Bella
The reason I'm posting this time is because a little over four weeks ago, Bella had another litter. This time there were SEVEN! And they're all still alive! Yay! They're so precious! Here's the website for the kennel if you're interested in buying a puppy vangardkennels

Changing Baby

Babies grow and change so quickly! I'm amazed at how much my niece Aubri has changed in the last six months.
The first photo is of Aubri at like a week old. She was so little. The jacket was way too big, but so cute. She was this little, round faced Eskimo looking pink thing with straight hair. The second photo is Aubri at like 5 months. She's got a lot more hair that's curly now. No longer pink. Feet hanging off the edge of her car seat and pants that are big in the waste but too short. She's got so much personality now too. Still such a good baby. Only cries when she's really frustrated or tired. I love her and can't wait to see her again in January!
Here are some more photos from my trip to Virginia for Thanksgiving.
Aubri playing with Mommy. She's so happy.

Gimme that, Mommy! Rachel teases her with things cause she thinks it's funny.

Which Auntie do you think Aubri likes better? The brunette Auntie Katie?

Or fun, blonde Auntie Tat?

First feeding of baby food. She's crying here but that's only cause daddy took away her spoon (that she was playing with) and wasn't feeding her fast enough.

Sisters with Aubri in Barnes & Noble. We took a ton of pictures here by the way, but this is the best tame one and Aubri's smile is great.

Sisters with Johnathan and Aubri at dinner right before Katie left.

Lay Down Your Soles

I started this post when I was in Virginia but the photos weren't uploading on my sis' internet so it was saved as a draft. I'd been wanting to post this since that day but never got around to finishing it until now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is one that I've been meaning to blog about for 2 weeks now. Two Sundays ago, November 9 to be exact, Pastor Matt talked about poverty and what we could do to help. There were several ministries and organizations that he mentioned that we could become a part of and/or get information about after the service. The big thing that week though was his challenge. He challenged us to bring a pair of shoes for homeless people or people that need good shoes. And if we felt so convicted, to take off the shoes we were wearing and bring them to the front during worship after the sermon. It was so cool. Unfortunately I was wearing the shoes I had bought the day before for the wedding that I was in that afternoon so I couldn't bring mine to the front, but alot of people did. I took this photo after the 10:30 service. There were still 2 more services that day. I also thought it was really cool to see people walking around inside and outside in socks or barefoot just talking like normal, some of them finding out more information of other ministries they could get involved in to help out with and use their gifts. These are just a few people who took off their shoes for someone else. (I think there are two barefoot and two in socks behind some legs) The black barefeet belong to Adrian, she was in my small group a couple years ago. She's great but was hesitant to let me take a picture of her barefeet. The following week this sign was on the gym wall for those who brought a pair of shoes that week. Underneath was a pile of shoes, new and used. I really like the way it's phrased. The Sandals staff is so creative and really know how to use words in a powerful way. And this is a truckload of donated "soles" that were being brought to the church office. I'm so blessed to be part of such a giving church!

Christmas Songs

Posted on December 26, 2008 at 3:46 PM Comments comments (0)
It was so nice this morning to click through all of my favorite radio stations and actually have several really great songs playing to choose to listen to. I was relieved to not here a single Christmas song on any station! That always limited the good song choices that were playing on all the other stations. Some of these songs even feel old to me cause I haven't heard them in so long. It's not that I don't like Christmas music, I just don't like most of it. So I'm happy to have my normal selection of music back.

School and Ebay

I've been on break for exactly two weeks now and I still have two and a half weeks till winter quarter starts, but for some reason I've been stressing myself out about it again. I was getting really stressed the last couple of weeks of fall quarter. I even skipped out of small group early to study and write a paper (which I actually did the next day in between finals). When I get stressed, I get emotional, so it sucks to be around me. Well the other day I stopped by school to pay out a few hundred dollars for tuition, grad check, change of major, and a new parking permit. Erg, I hate paying that much money at one time for ridiculous things. Then today I was asked my grades from that quarter so I looked them up. I also decided to check up on the remaining classes I need to graduate. This resulted in me adding a 4 hour class to my schedule this winter. Now I'm taking 6 classes next quarter. Arg. They're pretty random too. American Sign Language, Computer Science (which is only 2 units and once a week, thank God), Business Finance, Dance Sampler and Self Defense (I'm super excited about these two classes), and Political Science. Even now I spent another half hour searching for more classes that would fit into my schedule because I realized I am registered for ASL II, I haven't taken ASL I yet so that might be difficult. I do know some sign language from work, but definitely not enough to just skip a class. So again I looked up all the classes I still need and tried to find one being offered during the ASL II time slot I have or one of my PE classes since I only need one PE class. But I couldn't find anything! So I'm still registered for six classes, two of which are fun, one of which I probably won't follow anything and will have to drop, and the other three are just lame...I hate my life sometimes. I bought my books tonight too. That was another chunk of change. Not as bad as previous quarters however. I got really lucky and found some really good deals online. Like a book which had an average price of over $200 I got for $20. Ebay's great sometimes. Speaking of Ebay, my dad just discovered it. He's on the computer now more than anyone else in the house. If you know my dad at all, most of you probably didn't even know I had a dad, this is pretty funny. I'll give you an idea of my dad's knowledge of computers. Tonight he asked, "When the screen is filled like this [referring to a full screen image he had up], how do you make it smaller?" My brother and sister both looked and at the same time said "Press Escape." He just kinda stared at the keyboard for a few seconds before saying, "Where's that?" My brother then came over and showed him where the Escape key was and explained to him what it does. I must admit he's getting progressively better at handling the computer. He still gets really frustrated with it too though. Another example from tonight: The internet was apparently too slow for his liking so after asking what was wrong several times, he got up and went to the other room. Maybe an hour later he came back in the room and asked if it had sped up yet. He's so funny. Anyway, he's all about Ebay lately. My cousin got an Ebay gift card last night for Christmas and I'm pretty sure he was actually jealous. But he told him Ebay was having a deal now that you get an extra % off your purchase if you use their card. He didn't realize they want to you use their CREDIT card, not GIFT card. It's pretty entertaining when he loses an item he bid on too. He gets all upset.

I'm very Disliked

  • I know it's been a long time since my last post. There have been many topics I have thought about posting, but never found the time or had the energy or drive to do it. I'm forgetting about all of those posts now since it's far too late.
  • What's on my mind today relates to my work. There is one school that I sub at regulary. It is a junior high/high school specifically for kids that are classified as SED-Severely Emotionally Disturbed. Most of these kids have been arrested for one reason or another. Some may not be technically SED, but fall under something else which still results in them attending this school.
  • I've become good friends with many of the workers here including teachers, teacher's assistants, secretaries, and even one or two members of the administration. Last week I was invited to their staff Christmas party. I felt so appreciated and had a really great time! Last week I was also added to the staff birthday board that's in the office. They took down my birthday and printed my name on a label which they then put under the month of June with the rest of the June babies. Again, felt very appreciated! There have been many times when I've been asked to join a group of staff for some wings after work, even when I don't work at their school that day. So I really enjoy working with these really fun people who have accepted me into their community and gladly accept assignments when requested.
  • But today kinda sucked. In fact, I've worked at this particular school four times in the last week and a half. Three of these days were in the same classroom-C1. The assistants and the students in this room are great! I have a great time with them. I've known most of the kids for a couple years now and they pretty much listen to what I have to say. My problem is the actual teacher-Mrs. Tibbetts. I can say alot of really negative things about her personality and teaching (in)abilities, but I'll just mention a few things that really have erked me since I've worked with her recently.

1. She calls me Rachel. I've worked in her classroom maybe 10 times or more in the last year and she still calls me Rachel. No, she's never met my sister and didn't even know I had a sister named Rachel till I told her when she apologized after a STUDENT yelled at and corrected her in my defense. She never apologized when I corrected her and after a while I just stopped correcting her because it was stupid.

2. She sends me on errands to the office non-stop (I think just to get me out of the room). While I've become greater friends with the office staff because of her errands that she sends me on one at a time, as opposed to all at once, it's really annoying to be able to say that I made 8 trips to the office during the first HOUR of school. 3 of those trips were in the first 15 minutes. (I will also mention here that Sterling, the other assistant in the room, had brought donuts on this day and it seemed like every time I was about to pick one up, she called my name. And I missed most of the movie--both times--that day)

3. It was my fault that the staff member who usually does the monthly attendence wasn't there. I don't know how to do it, I'm just a substitute. Why doesn't Sterling know how to do it? Wait, why doesn't Mrs. Tibbetts know how to do it? Why is it MY fault nobody knows how to do it and it can't get done because the secretary's too busy to explain it to somebody (which would have been me and had no effect on any situations like this in the future if I wasn't there)?

4. Not only does she give me ridiculous busy work jobs and blame me for everyone (including herself) being ignorant of the school's attendence procedures, she also gives me jobs I REALLY shouldn't be doing. Such as calling parents to verify absences. A SUBSTITUTE should not be calling and talking to parents about why their kid wasn't at school on a previous day of the week. When I didn't jump up right away to do the unethical task, she folded her hands in front of her and said indignantly, "Miss Rachel, I asked you to make phone calls. Are you going to do that for me?" I replied sweetly with "Mr. Sterling said he'll do it since he's your permanent assistant." But I was boiling inside! (I had just sat down and started to watch the movie, Sterling hadn't moved all day except to get a donut!)

5. She actually asked her assistants NOT to request me anymore! I figured this out today when I saw an assignment for Miss Julie and it didn't say "requested" like usual. I took it anyway since it was the only one available and I didn't work yesterday because there were none available. I also took it because I enjoy it there and I really just wanted to spite her by showing up even though I KNEW she had asked her not to request me. When I asked Sterling if she had done that, he didn't answer right away then said, "She doesn't like any subs really...but I enjoy working with you!"

  • Well, I don't like her much either. That won't stop me from working in her room though. I've never worked somewhere and had a staff member just not like me. They have usually asked for my number (to request me with) and asked me to come back. I have alot of regular schools I work at and therefore, know alot of people, because they express appreciation for my work ethic and abilities. So it is wierd to KNOW for a fact that a teacher does not like me. Even though she's not one whose opinion I hold very highly at all, it's still odd. And it's only that much worse because the two assistants and the students appreciate my presence in the classroom. And I enjoy their's--most days. So do I ignore her immature actions and work there anyway? or succumb to her desires and deny those assignments for her room?
  • Oh, I was actually pretty excited when I arrived today and learned that she was doing CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention-something like that) training today and tomorrow so she'd be absent. Yeah, I day without her-fun. Of course, her substitute was on the phone the entire time and ended up leaving after 2 hours because she hit her head on the tv set.........That's all I'll say about that.
